COURSE CURRICULUM

The Exercise Physiology course focuses on a hands-on, practitioner-led approach, emphasising “learn in the doing” to prepare students for professional practice. Students gain confidence in interacting with clients, conducting exercise testing, explaining physiological responses, and prescribing effective exercise interventions. Taught physiology modules explore acute and chronic responses to exercise, environmental stressors using thermal and hypoxic chambers, and the use of ergogenic aids, helping students understand human physiology in both healthy and clinical populations. A solution-focused learning approach develops laboratory skills and principles applicable to any exercise physiology scenario. Personal and Professional Development modules equip students with vocational skills, while placements of around 100 hours provide real-world experience and networking opportunities, bridging the gap between academic study and industry practice. Lectures and seminars foster reflection, emotional intelligence, and ethical awareness, with a strong focus on client safety, risk assessment, and professional ethics. Students also develop research skills, learning to analyse and interpret physiological data using a range of statistical methods, and can complete a final project as a dissertation, research paper, or case study, with opportunities for publication. Core modules include skills for physiological assessment, science in practice, clinical exercise physiology, personal and professional development, and a final research project, alongside optional modules such as exercise tolerance, applied environmental physiology, and the science of physical performance and training.
