COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Ecology and Conservation program combines core modules with optional specialisations to provide a comprehensive foundation in ecological research and conservation practice. Core modules include Communicating Issues in Ecology and Conservation and the MRes Research Project, which equip students with the skills to effectively present scientific findings and conduct an original, in-depth research project. These modules emphasise critical thinking, independent study, and the practical application of ecological knowledge to real-world challenges. In addition to the core modules, students can choose from a wide range of option modules to tailor their learning to specific interests and career goals. Options include Environmental Impact Assessment, Key Concepts in Environmental Assessment and Management, Introduction to Geographical Information Systems, Masters Independent Study, Applied Taxonomy for Conservation, Applications in GIS, Water Quality Assessment and Management, Microbiology, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Remediation, and Applied Remote Sensing, though availability may vary depending on timetabling and staff resources. These optional modules provide opportunities to develop specialised skills in areas such as spatial analysis, environmental monitoring, conservation techniques, and applied ecological research. By combining rigorous academic study with hands-on research experience, the program prepares graduates for advanced study, including PhD research, or professional roles in conservation, environmental management, and ecological consultancy.
