COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Design MA offers a structured yet flexible curriculum that combines core modules with optional studies to support the development of advanced design knowledge and practice. Core modules provide a strong foundation, beginning with Design Research Practices, which equips students with methodologies to investigate and critically engage with design challenges, and Situate, which encourages contextual understanding of design in social, cultural, and environmental frameworks. Radical Modes of Design Culture and Practice explores innovative and experimental approaches to contemporary design, while Design Lab offers a practical, studio-based environment to apply creative and technical skills to real-world projects. The Design: Masterwork module allows students to develop a substantial, self-directed project that demonstrates their ability to integrate research, experimentation, and creative insight. Optional modules offer opportunities for specialization, such as Distributed Design and Production, which focuses on collaborative and networked approaches to making, Sustainable Design: Future(s), which investigates forward-looking, environmentally responsible design strategies, and Critical Readings in Spatial Design, which encourages reflective analysis of design theory and practice in built environments. Through this combination of core and optional modules, students develop the research, critical thinking, and practical design skills necessary to address complex sustainability challenges and contribute meaningfully to contemporary design practice.
