COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art MA is structured in two main sections, both integrating theory and practice while emphasising portfolio development and visual documentation, culminating in assessed exhibitions. The first section, lasting one year part-time or six months full-time, focuses on identifying and developing each student’s chosen mode of practice. Students are encouraged to experiment and re-evaluate their approaches, fostering creative growth and conceptual development. Work is regularly displayed and discussed within the group, promoting peer engagement and professional networking, while lectures and seminars from the core teaching team and visiting guest speakers provide insight into contemporary art practices and critical discourse. The second section prepares students for the final assessment exhibition, with regular crits, group meetings, and seminars linked to individual work, allowing students to refine their artistic practice and professional skills. This phase also includes tutorials on the extended research essay completed during the summer, which integrates written and visual analysis. Core modules include Reconfiguring Practice, Consolidating Practice, Research Methods and Professional Practice, and the Research Essay: Written/Visual, which together ensure students develop a rigorous and reflective approach to their practice. Overall, the program nurtures both creative and critical abilities, preparing graduates for professional artistic careers or further research in contemporary art.
