COURSE CURRICULUM

The Quantity Surveying degree is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive understanding of the built environment, cost management, and construction practices. In the first year, students are introduced to fundamental aspects of the industry, including building technology, construction materials, surveying, and indoor environmental systems. This foundation equips students with essential technical knowledge and an understanding of the built environment’s design and functionality. In the second year, the focus shifts towards professional quantity surveying practice, building on prior learning while developing specialized skills in construction methods, estimating and quantification of works, cost and contract administration, and the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM). Students gain practical experience in applying cost-management principles and understanding project risk, value, and sustainability considerations. The final year consolidates learning through an individual honours project and advanced modules in sustainable construction, construction risk, financial analysis, and professional practice. Option modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including project planning, building pathology, and circular economy approaches to construction. Across all years, the degree emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration with stakeholders, preparing graduates for careers as quantity surveyors, cost consultants, and construction professionals capable of managing complex projects efficiently, sustainably, and responsibly in an evolving industry.
