COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Counselling Studies BSc degree at Brighton combines the study of psychology with practical counselling skills, offering a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour, mental health, and wellbeing. In the first year, students are introduced to core areas of psychology, exploring key theories, research methods, and the social and psychological factors that contribute to wellbeing. Modules cover applied psychology, developmental psychology, the psychology of wellbeing, and practical research skills, providing a solid foundation for future study and practice. In the second year, students specialise in counselling through a dedicated module examining key theoretical approaches to counselling and psychotherapy, while continuing to develop knowledge in psychology, including mental health, cognition, and social psychology. Options and a Community Engagement module offer practical experience, enabling students to apply theory in real-world contexts and build professional skills. In the final year, students undertake a psychology dissertation, tailoring their research to their interests and career goals. Counselling skills are further developed, with a focus on building effective therapeutic relationships and applying theory to support individuals in making positive changes. The program equips graduates with the knowledge, research experience, and practical skills required for careers in psychology, counselling, mental health, and wider helping professions.
