COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design BSc(Hons) degree provides a structured progression through the study of design, combining practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and professional preparation. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental elements of product design through four core modules that build on one another, developing creativity, prototyping, communication, and evaluation skills. They explore design histories and theories, inclusive design, human factors, and digital manufacturing, engaging with global design initiatives such as Fixperts to contextualize their learning. In the second year, students develop products for real markets, learning to use a range of technologies to create prototypes while considering commercial viability and global issues. They engage with frameworks for responsible design, explore contemporary design challenges, and begin to define their preferred paths for practice and further study. The final year focuses on professional preparation and self-directed work. Initial projects allow students to identify a design specialism aligned with their career ambitions, while a dissertation supports their research and informs practice. The year culminates in a major, self-directed project integrating learning across design practice and technology modules, producing well-resolved, clearly communicated outcomes that embody the technical skills, conceptual understanding, and professional values developed throughout the course. Graduates leave equipped to enter the design industry as versatile, innovative practitioners.
