COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science BSc(Hons) degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the natural world and the effects of human activity on ecosystems. In the first year, students build foundational skills in environmental science, including field research, data analysis, and physical geography, while exploring global challenges such as climate change and environmental degradation. Optional modules allow students to begin specialising in areas like ecology, microbiology, or marine and freshwater biology. In the second year, students develop advanced analytical and applied skills, supported by modules on GIS, remote sensing, research design, and professional practice for global challenges. This year also focuses on employability, with opportunities to engage in international fieldwork, ecological studies, and programming for data science, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical settings. The final year centres on independent research through a dissertation, allowing students to investigate a chosen environmental topic with guidance from academic experts. Additional option modules let students specialise further in areas such as ecological impact assessment, environmental economics, water and sanitation, species interactions, and community placements. Throughout the course, students gain practical, analytical, and professional skills, preparing them for careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, research, policy development, and sustainable management, or for progression to postgraduate study.
