COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecology and Conservation BSc(Hons) degree provides a comprehensive understanding of ecological principles, biodiversity, and conservation strategies. In the first year, students explore the foundations of marine and freshwater biology, genetics, evolution, microorganisms, plants, terrestrial ecosystems, and the essential skills needed for a career as a professional bioscientist. This establishes a strong grounding in both theory and practical laboratory techniques. In the second year, knowledge and skills are further developed with modules on population biology, GIS and remote sensing, research skills, animal diversity and adaptations, and marine and freshwater ecology. Students also have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork, including a potential international trip to South Africa, enhancing their practical experience and understanding of global conservation challenges. The final year allows students to specialise in areas of personal interest while engaging with current topics in ecology and conservation. Core modules include ecological impact assessment, species interactions, hot topics in ecology, and an independent ecology research project, enabling students to apply their knowledge in practical, real-world contexts. Option modules allow further specialisation in areas such as advanced GIS, political ecology, aquatic environments, and global ecosystems. The course combines theoretical study, fieldwork, and research to prepare graduates for careers in conservation, ecology, environmental consultancy, and related fields.
