COURSE CURRICULUM

The Data Science degree provides a comprehensive education in statistics, programming, and mathematics, equipping students with the skills needed to extract insights from complex data sets and support decision-making across industries. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in programming, statistical analysis, databases, visualisation, and core mathematics, ensuring a strong base for more advanced study. Modules include managing systems and operations, introduction to data analysis with SAS, computing technologies, fundamentals of programming, mathematical foundations, and introduction to statistics. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced data analysis methodologies, applied machine learning, database management, statistical modelling, and programming for data science. Students also develop communication skills and an understanding of ethical issues in data management, ensuring they can present findings clearly and responsibly in professional contexts. In the final year, students undertake a compulsory Data Science Project, often collaborating with industry partners or contributing to academic research, alongside selecting optional modules tailored to their interests. These options include advanced artificial intelligence, data mining, time series forecasting, advanced statistical modelling, natural language understanding, and medical statistics for data science. Throughout the degree, practical projects, individual work, and teamwork cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional skills, preparing graduates to apply data-driven approaches effectively and ethically in a variety of professional environments.
