COURSE CURRICULUM

The Building Surveying degree provides a structured progression of knowledge and skills over three years, preparing students for a career in the construction and property sectors. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental elements of the built environment, including building technology and design, construction materials, indoor environment and building services, and land and construction surveying. This foundation develops both technical understanding and awareness of industry practices. In the second year, students build on this knowledge, delving deeper into building surveying through modules in professional practice, construction methods and technology, advanced building surveying, cost and contract administration, indoor environment and building services, and Building Information Modelling. Practical skills are reinforced through real-world applications and collaborative projects, enhancing readiness for professional practice. In the final year, students undertake an individual research project to develop independent research skills and expertise in a specific area of interest. Core modules include building pathology and life care, advanced building surveying, and an honours project, while option modules allow students to specialise in areas such as environmental impact assessment, construction risk and financial analysis, project planning, waste management, sustainable construction, and the circular economy. Graduates will be well-equipped to contribute to property development, maintenance, conservation, and sustainable building projects, combining technical knowledge with practical experience and professional insight.
