COURSE CURRICULUM

The Design Engineering BEng degree provides students with a progressive, hands-on approach to developing practical and creative engineering skills. In the first year, students are introduced to fundamental concepts in product design and engineering, focusing on making, thinking, and evaluation. They engage in projects such as designing water rockets, building electrical systems, and collaborating with the Fixperts global community to solve real-world challenges. Core modules cover design practice, design engineering fundamentals, digital manufacturing, and inclusive design, building a solid foundation in technical and creative skills. In the second year, students apply their knowledge to real-market products, exploring the commercial aspects of design including manufacturability, costing, and fulfillment. They also expand on fundamental engineering topics through projects such as self-balancing robots, vehicle dynamics modeling, and integrating heat transfer with fluids and structures. Modules focus on interactions and experiences, design to market, responsible design, and systems engineering. The final year allows students to define their specialism and refine their professional ambitions through advanced engineering projects, including industry or research-informed briefs. Projects may involve high-level applications such as developing bike force pedal sensors for Team GB, emphasizing design outcomes that are innovative, well-researched, and effectively communicated. This structure ensures graduates are equipped with technical expertise, creativity, and professional experience to excel in design engineering careers.
