COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology degree provides a thorough and engaging exploration of how societies function, how social groups form, and how inequalities and social change occur. In the first year, students are introduced to core debates in sociology, gaining an understanding of social inequality, research methods, and the processes behind sociological investigation. Modules cover topics such as sociological imagination, contemporary social inequalities, social movements, and activism, alongside practical research skills that provide a foundation for future study. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of contemporary sociological theories and gain hands-on research experience to prepare for their final-year dissertation. They can also tailor their studies through optional modules, including opportunities for voluntary work placements that allow them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. The final year enables students to specialise in areas of personal interest, engaging in advanced research, critical analysis, and application of sociological concepts. Core and optional modules cover a wide range of contemporary issues, including violence, globalisation, climate, human rights, and social justice. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, equipping them for careers in social research, public policy, community engagement, education, and other roles where understanding society and social change is essential.
