COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology and Sociology BA(Hons) degree at Brighton offers a comprehensive exploration of human behaviour, thought, and social interaction. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of both disciplines, studying topics such as developmental psychology, psychological investigations, sociological theory, and the foundations of sociology, while learning essential research methods that will support independent study in later years. In the second year, the focus shifts to a deeper scientific understanding of psychological processes and how individuals engage with the social world, covering areas like brain, body, and cognition, social psychology, the life course, and sociological theory, alongside opportunities to explore optional modules such as forensic security or mental health. The final year allows students to specialise according to their interests, choosing between a Psychology Dissertation, essential for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, or a broader dissertation in sociology. Students also select from a wide range of optional modules addressing contemporary issues such as social justice, globalisation, class and power, cyberpsychology, ecopsychology, and human rights. Throughout the course, practical projects, research, and independent study develop critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills, while engagement with real-world issues equips graduates for careers in psychology, social research, community work, and related professional fields.
