COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology and Criminology degree at Brighton offers a comprehensive exploration of human behaviour and the causes, consequences, and control of crime. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in both disciplines, including developmental psychology, applied psychology, and theories of crime, alongside core research methods that underpin practical and investigative work. The second year builds on this knowledge, focusing on areas such as social psychology, brain and cognition, and critical perspectives on justice, while also examining practical methods of crime prevention and control. Students can choose optional modules, including forensic security, mental health, and community engagement, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests. In the final year, students gain significant flexibility to specialise further, undertaking a psychology dissertation required for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society, or a criminology-focused dissertation to pursue topics of personal and professional relevance. Additional modules explore areas such as forensic psychology, violence and society, cyberpsychology, sexualities, ecopsychology, and global issues related to crime and harm. Throughout the course, students develop practical, analytical, and research skills, combining theoretical understanding with real-world application, preparing them for careers in psychology, criminal justice, law enforcement, or related fields, and equipping them with the knowledge to address complex social and behavioural challenges.
