COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics, Sexuality and Gender degree explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and political power, equipping students with theoretical knowledge and practical experience to understand and influence contemporary social change. In the first year, students study core modules introducing world politics, political practice, and the foundations of sexuality and gender studies, alongside an option module to tailor their learning. Year two builds on this foundation, exploring UK politics, the relationships between gender, race and the environment, and issues of power and the body, while allowing students to specialise through optional modules such as queer writing or global policy studies. Students also develop research skills and engage in practical experience through community placements or workplace projects. In the final year, students focus on progressive social transformation and activism, examining how civil society and campaigning organisations can effect political change. The course culminates in a major independent research project, where students pursue a topic of their choice with academic supervision, supported by option modules that deepen knowledge in areas such as human rights, radical politics, feminism, climate justice, or utopian theory. Across all three years, the degree combines academic rigour with applied learning, developing critical thinking, analytical skills, research expertise, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in activism, policy, advocacy, and social change.
