COURSE CURRICULUM

The Photography degree at Brighton guides students through a structured progression of creative practice, critical study, and professional development across three years. In the first year, students engage with four themed practice modules—Photography and Identity, Photography and Place, The Real and the Imagined, and Stillness and Time—alongside two historical and critical studies modules, Origins and Histories of Photography and Photographic Documents and Photographic Fictions, which provide a foundation in the medium’s history and conceptual frameworks. Year two encourages greater independence and experimentation, with students selecting practice module projects informed by staff research interests, exploring themes such as Archives, Journeys, Traces, and Unlikely Spaces. Opportunities to work with other media, including moving image and sound, and to organise exhibitions both within and outside the university, further develop creative and professional skills. Core modules include Photographic Investigations, Concepts and Theories in Contemporary Photography, The Global Challenge Project, and Professional Practice, culminating in an independent project that prepares students for self-directed study. In the final year, students consolidate their individual practice through modules including Independent Practice 1 and 2, Professional Practice, an Extended Essay, and a Dissertation. This progression ensures graduates leave with a distinctive portfolio, strong conceptual understanding, and professional experience, ready to pursue careers in photography, visual arts, or related creative industries.
