COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Business and Media degree combines academic study with practical experience to prepare students for a career in the contemporary music industry. In the first year, students explore the social, cultural, economic, political, and technological changes that have shaped media and music industries, developing critical understanding and theoretical insight. Core modules cover media and popular culture, the music business, and the histories and contexts of popular music, alongside critical approaches to media. Optional modules allow students to gain additional skills in areas such as video production, photographic practice, film studies, and community media. In the second year, students focus on applying their knowledge through an industry placement and live projects while developing research skills to support independent work. Modules explore the British music industry, music technology, and media placement, alongside options such as community radio, social media for activist groups, and project management, giving students practical, hands-on experience. In the final year, students undertake advanced projects, including music innovation labs, digital media marketing, and live industry collaborations, as well as an independent research project. This final stage allows students to consolidate their creative and professional skills, preparing them to navigate the music industry confidently, combining conceptual knowledge with practical expertise and real-world experience.
