COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media Studies degree at Brighton provides a structured and comprehensive approach to understanding media in contemporary society. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge, exploring the social, cultural, economic, political, and technological changes associated with media development. Core modules cover digital media production and consumption, media and popular culture, and critical approaches to media, with optional modules in video production, photography, audience studies, and film, allowing students to begin developing practical and analytical skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to practical industry experience and research skills. An industry placement provides real-world insight into media operations, while modules in research methods and methodology prepare students for independent study and critical analysis. Students also continue to develop technical expertise and professional understanding through options in media ethics, podcasting, brand communications, and specialist production portfolios. The final year centers on an independent dissertation or production-based project, supported by experienced supervisors, enabling students to integrate their learning in a sustained piece of research or creative work. Additional modules examine global challenges, political communication, media law, digital innovation, and niche topics such as science fiction, fantasy, and video game analysis. Graduates emerge with the knowledge, critical insight, and practical experience needed for careers in media, communications, journalism, and related industries.
