COURSE CURRICULUM

The Multi-Platform Journalism degree at Brighton provides a comprehensive three-year program that develops the skills and knowledge required for a professional journalism career. In the first year, students gain a solid foundation in core journalism practices, learning to write news stories and features, produce podcasts and videos, and develop shorthand proficiency. They also study journalism ethics, media theory, government, and political context, building a critical understanding of the role of journalism in society. Modules include Video Journalism, Introduction to Journalism Studies, News and Ethics, Production Journalism, Politics in Context, and Audio Journalism. In the second year, students expand their practical experience by reporting from a personal local news patch, designing print layouts, editing websites, mastering social media, and refining shorthand to professional standards. They also study media law, investigative journalism, and critical issues in the field, developing both technical and analytical abilities. Modules include Specialist Portfolio, Critical Issues in Journalism, Media Law, Converging Journalism, and News Portfolio and Shorthand. The final year focuses on independent, in-depth work through the Critical Investigation, a substantial piece of investigative journalism accompanied by an analytical essay. Students also gain industry experience through placements and develop expertise in broadcast, public service, and magazine journalism. Modules include Broadcast Journalism, Public Service Journalism, Magazine Journalism, Critical Investigation, and Professional Practice. By the end of the degree, graduates are fully equipped to enter the competitive journalism industry with practical experience, ethical understanding, and professional credibility.
