COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interior Design BA degree at Brighton guides students through a structured, progressive program that emphasizes human-centered design, creativity, and professional practice. In the first year, students develop foundational skills by exploring intimate to residential-scale projects that consider real sites, contexts, and users. Core modules such as Situating the Interior, Inhabiting the Interior, Architecture Criticism 1, and Technology: Principles introduce design principles, spatial thinking, and technical understanding, establishing a strong base for future study. The second year expands into narrative and commercial aspects of interior design, with students engaging in projects focused on retail, hospitality, exhibition, and workplace environments. Modules including Narrating the Interior, Commercialising the Interior, Technology: Strategies, and Architecture Criticism 2 emphasize branding, identity, adaptive reuse, and the effective use of light, material, and form to communicate ideas. In the final year, students undertake a major self-directed project, developing a fully resolved interior design solution through technical drawings, models, and visualizations. Modules such as Interior Definition, Interior Development, Interior Resolution, and Architecture Criticism 3 support the creation of professional-quality work while fostering critical reflection and research skills. The year culminates in the Summer Show, where students present their projects to industry professionals and the public, leaving graduates with a comprehensive portfolio and the expertise to pursue careers in interior design, spatial planning, and related creative industries.
