COURSE CURRICULUM

The Illustration degree at Brighton is structured to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills across three progressive years. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of visual communication through studio-based projects and workshops in observational and life drawing, photography, and book arts. Core modules, including Introduction to Visual Communication, The Practice of Visual Communication, Media, Messages and Meaning in Illustration, and Developing a Visual Language, guide students in establishing their own visual language while exploring the basic concepts of illustration. In the second year, the focus shifts to sequential communication and more independent, collaborative, and experimental approaches to practice. Students engage with the creative industries through professional development programs and weekly guest lectures, and have the option to study abroad at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Modules such as Audiences and Contexts, Global Challenges in Visual Communication, and Contemporary Practice further develop analytical, creative, and professional skills. In the final year, students consolidate their learning in a self-directed program of study, undertaking set projects, live industry briefs, and prestigious competitions while establishing professional practice links. Modules including Articulation of Illustration 1 and 2 and Independent Practice in Illustration support the creation of a professional portfolio, preparing graduates for careers in illustration, publishing, animation, and other creative industries.
