COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graphic Design degree at Brighton develops students’ creative, technical, and analytical skills through a progressive, studio-focused curriculum. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of visual communication, developing their own visual language through studio projects and workshops in areas such as computing, letterpress, photography, and book arts. Core modules, including Introduction to Graphic Design, Cultural Contexts in Graphic Design, Graphic Design: Media and Messages, and Contemporary Contexts in Graphic Design, provide a solid foundation in both practical and theoretical aspects of the discipline. The second year builds on this foundation, encouraging self-initiated, collaborative, and experimental approaches to design while deepening knowledge of communication concepts. Modules such as Graphic Design: Modes of Communication, Audiences and Contexts, and Global Challenges – Visual Communication promote critical thinking, while professional development opportunities and guest lectures offer insight into industry practice and career pathways. In the final year, students focus on independent and self-directed projects, synthesizing their learning into a coherent body of work. Modules include Independent Graphic Design Practice, Critical Graphic Design Research Project, Major Project, and Professional Practice, allowing students to consolidate technical skills, critical analysis, and industry knowledge. Graduates leave equipped with creativity, professional expertise, and a strong portfolio, ready for careers in graphic design, digital media, branding, and other creative industries.
