COURSE CURRICULUM

The Globalisation: History, Politics, Culture degree is structured to develop critical understanding of global processes through history, politics, and culture. In the first year, students take six core modules—Historical Inquiry, Globalisation, Conflict and the Environment, Studying Cultures, Democracy, Philosophical Inquiry, and The Politics of Representation—building foundational knowledge and analytical skills. In the second year, students begin to specialise through the Globalisation option pathway, studying Colonialism in the Contemporary Global Order and Development and Sustainability, which explore post-colonial theory, international power relations, and global development challenges. Alongside this pathway, students select a second humanities option pathway, such as Philosophy and Literature, Self and Society, Race and Resistance, or Radical Histories, and begin research for their final-year dissertation. The final year consolidates prior learning while deepening engagement with critical issues. Globalisation modules such as Transatlantic Enslavement and the Making of Race and Human Rights and Humanitarian Intervention examine the historical and contemporary impacts of colonialism, slavery, migration, identity, and international human rights, combining historical analysis with ethical and political critique. Students also complete a final project and oral examination, demonstrating independent research, critical reflection, and professional communication skills. Graduates leave equipped to pursue careers in journalism, politics, publishing, teaching, NGOs, business, or academia with a nuanced understanding of global interconnectedness.
