COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography BA (Hons) degree at Brighton provides a comprehensive study of human, physical, and environmental geography, combining theoretical understanding with practical fieldwork and research skills. In the first year, students are introduced to key concepts, including human impacts on the environment, physical landscape processes, and the diversity of social perspectives on the world. Core modules such as Fundamentals of Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Global Challenges, alongside field-based learning and a residential field trip, equip students with essential analytical and practical skills. The second year allows for specialization, enabling students to select modules across human, physical, or environmental geography or focus on individual interests, while continuing to develop research and professional practice skills. Modules include Professional Practice for Global Challenges, Geography and Environment International Field Work, and options such as Political and Economic Geography, Sustainable Futures, and GIS and Remote Sensing. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation, applying research methods and analytical techniques learned in earlier years, supported by expert supervision. Additional option modules, such as Political Ecology, Community Placement, and Advanced GIS, allow students to tailor their studies to specific career goals. Graduates leave equipped with a strong combination of research, analytical, and practical skills, prepared for careers in environmental management, policy, international development, and related fields.
