COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art Painting BA (Hons) degree develops creative independence, technical ability, and critical understanding through a structured progression of studio practice and theory. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of painting, focusing on experimentation, risk-taking, and self-directed creative work. Workshops cover essential painting techniques, materials, and methods, while seminars explore global art histories and professional development. Through modules such as Studio and Public Exhibition Practices and Professional Development, students gain experience in curating and exhibiting work publicly. Opportunities for overseas study placements in Japan and Korea further broaden their artistic and cultural perspectives. In the final year, students focus on developing a cohesive body of work to professional standards, which is showcased in the university’s annual graduate exhibition. Alongside their studio practice, they complete a research essay that critically situates their work within the wider art world. Professional development lectures on self-employment, networking, and project management prepare students for life after graduation.
