COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature degree at Brighton provides a comprehensive grounding in literary approaches, theories, genres, and periods during the first two years, preparing students for more independent study and practice in their final year. In the first year, core modules introduce students to key literary concepts and critical thinking, while developing presentation and debating skills through seminar-based learning. Students also explore creative and writing modules, which can be integrated into later research projects and dissertations. In the second year, students can either continue with the broad English Literature degree or specialise in pathways such as Sexuality and Gender or Comics and Graphic Novels. Option modules allow students to pursue personal interests across literature and related humanities disciplines, and there is the opportunity to study abroad, extending the degree to four years. The final year emphasises independent research and the application of skills gained throughout the course, culminating in a major dissertation or creative project. Core modules cover global contemporary literature, social change, and advanced research techniques, while optional modules enable further specialisation in areas such as Gothic texts, Shakespeare, Victorian sexualities, conflict, and migration. Throughout the degree, students develop analytical, creative, and communication skills, equipping them for careers in writing, publishing, media, education, and other creative and cultural industries.
