COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and Creative Writing degree develops both analytical and creative skills, guiding students to engage critically with a wide range of literary texts while refining their own writing. In the first year, students study diverse forms including novels, poetry, theatre, film, short stories, and autobiography, exploring texts from both creative and critical perspectives. Modules focus on understanding literary histories, cultural identities, and storytelling techniques, while fostering skills in creative expression and critical analysis. In the second year, students have the flexibility to tailor their degree through option modules, placement opportunities, field trips, and the chance to study abroad. Core modules encourage exploration of literature’s social impact, professional practice, and research skills, while options cover journalism, postcolonial and Black British literature, comics, children’s literature, queer writing, and more, allowing students to follow their interests. The final year centers on a dissertation, creative projects, and collaborative public events that showcase research and writing. Students can choose from a broad selection of option modules covering contemporary literature, adaptation, citizen journalism, creative writing projects, and thematic studies such as migration, environment, or Gothic texts. By combining rigorous literary study with practical creative practice, the course equips graduates with the skills to pursue careers in writing, publishing, media, education, and related creative fields.
