COURSE CURRICULUM

The Education degree provides a comprehensive understanding of learning, development, and the social contexts that shape education. In the first year, students explore psychological and sociological theories of human development, examining the influence of family, institutions, and broader societal structures on learning. Practical experience is introduced early through a placement that allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Core modules cover foundational topics such as how children and young people learn, educational thinkers and activists, social and educational inequalities, and the impact of policy and legislation on education. In the second year, the focus shifts to understanding how culture, aid, and globalisation influence education worldwide. Students critically engage with issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion while developing research skills to evaluate educational theories and practices. An eight-week placement module provides further practical experience in a relevant area of interest. In the final year, students consolidate their understanding of key educational initiatives, policies, and theories, reflecting on their own educational philosophy and preparing for professional careers or further study. The year culminates in an individual research project and dissertation, allowing students to explore topics aligned with their personal interests and career goals, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for a dynamic and impactful career in education.
