COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing degree provides a comprehensive exploration of writing, combining practical skills with critical study. In the first year, all students engage with core modules that develop an understanding of different writing genres and techniques while working closely with local writers. Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, and individual or small group tutorials, with modules such as Narratives of (Un)belonging, Writers on Writing, Storying the Self, Staging Politics, and Brighton Writes. In the second year, students have opportunities for placements, field trips to theatres, museums, schools, and community organizations, or even a semester abroad. At this stage, students can continue with the broad Creative Writing pathway or specialise in wellbeing or comics and graphic novels. Core modules include Comics, Cultures and Societies, Genres, Stories that Transform, Image and Text, Psychology, Professional Practice and Placement, and Research and Practice, complemented by a range of optional modules covering journalism, poetry, queer writing, community engagement, and literary history. The final year focuses on consolidating knowledge and skills through a major dissertation or creative project, with two core modules including the Creative Dissertation or Brighton Rocks: Final Year Show, and a range of options allowing exploration of applied comics, feminist theory, literature, wellbeing, and ecotherapy. The program emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and professional development, preparing students for diverse careers in writing, publishing, media, and cultural industries.
