COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art History and Visual Culture degree provides a comprehensive exploration of global and local art, design, and visual culture from historical, theoretical, and practical perspectives. In the first year, students share modules with Fashion and Design History peers, developing core skills in research, analysis, and visual communication while studying the movement of people, materials, and ideas and their impact on artistic production. Modules include cross-cultural concepts, material studies, and practical approaches to art and design, fostering a strong foundation in critical thinking and creative expression. In the second year, students expand their specialist knowledge through core and optional modules, with opportunities for creative work and international experience, including study at the University of Oslo. A placement module provides professional experience in museums, galleries, or cultural institutions, while field trips and cultural activities enrich learning. Modules cover topics such as gender and sexuality in art, ecology, research methods, and exhibition studies. In the final year, students undertake independent research projects, including a dissertation, team projects, and visual displays showcased at the Graduate Show. Advanced theoretical and practical studies, combined with close tutor support, prepare graduates for careers in museums, galleries, cultural organisations, or further academic research, equipping them with analytical, creative, and professional skills in art and visual culture.
