COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architecture BA(Hons) course spans three years, progressively developing students’ design, technical, and critical skills to prepare them for a professional career in architecture. In the first year, students are introduced to the culture and practice of architecture through humanities and design modules, which combine theoretical study with practical exercises such as small design projects and essays. Core design skills are further developed in studio work, alongside an introduction to key technological principles that underpin architectural practice. The first-year modules include Introducing Architecture, Architecture Criticism 1, Technology: Principles, and Architectural Design. In the second year, students build on these foundations through more complex design challenges and contextual projects, integrating technological strategies into their work while deepening their critical understanding of architecture. Modules in this year include Design Studio: Context, Technology: Strategies, Vertical Design Studio 1, and Architecture Criticism 2. In the final year, students undertake a major design project, applying detailed technological strategies, material selection, construction methods, structural considerations, and sustainable design principles. They also complete a humanities dissertation based on self-defined research, allowing them to explore areas of specialisation. The year culminates with a final project showcased at the graduate show, supported by modules in Design and Technology, Architecture Criticism 3, Professional Practices, and Vertical Design Studio 2, preparing students for professional practice.
