ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Brighton is a public university located in Brighton on the south coast of England. Its origins date back to 1858, when the Brighton School of Art opened in the Royal Pavilion, initially accommodating 110 students. The institution expanded over the years, with the Municipal School of Science and Technology opening in 1897 and later developments leading to the creation of Brighton College of Technology in the 1960s. In 1970, Brighton College of Technology merged with the School of Art to form Brighton Polytechnic. Around the same time, other local institutions, including Chelsea College of Physical Education, Eastbourne and Seaford Colleges of Education, and Brighton College of Education, merged to establish a broader higher education network in the region, with campuses in Falmer and Eastbourne. In 1992, under the Further and Higher Education Act, Brighton Polytechnic was granted university status and became the University of Brighton. Subsequent growth included the incorporation of the Sussex and Kent Institute of Nursing and Midwifery in 1994, the opening of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School in 2003 in partnership with the University of Sussex, and the short-lived Hastings campus from 2003 to 2016. The university also established Brighton International College in 2011 to provide international students with preparatory courses and English language support. In 2019, it launched the Brighton Centre for Contemporary Arts, a public arts space for exhibitions and events. With around 18,000 students and 2,400 staff, the University of Brighton offers a wide range of programs, including pharmacy, engineering, computing, art, architecture, nursing, teaching, sport science, journalism, criminology, and business, many of which lead to professional qualifications. The university has faced recent challenges, including staff redundancies in 2023 and the closure of the Centre for Contemporary Arts due to financial pressures, yet it continues to focus on practical, creative, and professional education and is internationally recognized, particularly for Art and Design.
