COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education degree provides students with the knowledge, practical experience, and professional skills needed to become successful sports coaches, physical education teachers, and sports development professionals. The programme combines the scientific principles of sport with coaching and teaching methods, helping students understand how the human body functions, moves, and responds to exercise. Throughout the course, students study human physiology, nutrition, anatomy, biomechanics, and sport psychology to gain a strong foundation in athletic performance and physical activity. They also explore coaching science, communication, motor learning, and psychological skills that help athletes improve performance, motivation, and confidence. The course places a strong emphasis on practical application, teaching students how to design and deliver safe, inclusive, and engaging coaching sessions and physical education lessons for people of different ages and abilities. Students develop skills in lesson planning, performance analysis, feedback techniques, and the use of modern technology to enhance coaching and teaching. The programme also examines youth development, the national curriculum, and the role of physical education in promoting lifelong health and participation in sport. Through applied coaching practice and professional placements, students gain valuable hands-on experience working in schools, sports clubs, and community settings, allowing them to apply theory to real-life situations and develop professional confidence. In the final stages of the degree, students complete research and work placement projects, where they investigate topics of interest, solve workplace challenges, and present their findings in a professional environment. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as biomechanics, sport psychology, physical education, and sport nutrition. The course develops essential skills including leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and reflective practice. Graduates are well prepared for careers in teaching, sports coaching, sports development, community sport programmes, leisure services, and further postgraduate study, providing an excellent pathway for those passionate about education, physical activity, and helping others achieve their sporting potential.
