COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences course provides a broad understanding of how the human body functions, moves, and performs during sport and exercise while preparing students for careers in health, fitness, coaching, and performance science. Throughout the programme, students study human physiology, nutrition, anatomy, biomechanics, and psychology to understand how exercise affects the body and how scientific principles can improve performance and wellbeing. They learn about body systems, healthy nutrition, movement analysis, and the relationship between muscles, joints, and nerves. The course also develops coaching knowledge, communication skills, and an understanding of how psychological factors such as motivation, confidence, and stress influence athletic performance. Students gain practical experience using advanced technologies, including video analysis, GPS tracking, fitness testing equipment, and biomechanical assessment tools to evaluate and improve performance in real sporting environments. The programme explores exercise physiology for both elite athletes and the general population, teaching students how to design training programmes, analyse performance data, and support individuals in achieving their health and fitness goals. In the final stages of the course, students undertake both a research project and a professional placement, allowing them to work with real employers, solve workplace problems, collect and analyse data, and present their findings in a professional setting. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as clinical exercise physiology, applied biomechanics, sport psychology, and nutrition. They may also learn how to support individuals with long-term health conditions, prevent injuries, improve athletic performance, and apply psychological techniques in real-life situations. The course develops essential professional skills, including problem-solving, teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and research abilities. Graduates are well prepared for careers in sports science, coaching, strength and conditioning, exercise rehabilitation, health promotion, performance analysis, and further postgraduate study in sport and exercise-related fields.
