COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Professional Policing programme provides students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional understanding needed for a career in modern policing and criminal justice. The course begins by introducing students to criminology, policing principles, and the criminal justice system, helping them understand crime, victimisation, and the role of the police in society. Students explore how policing has evolved over time and examine important issues such as accountability, ethics, governance, corruption, and the impact of social and political changes on policing practices. The programme develops a strong understanding of community and road policing, teaching students how police powers are used and how evidence-based approaches can improve public safety. Students also gain practical investigative skills, learning about intelligence gathering, witness interviewing, suspect questioning, and the collection of evidence. Modules on vulnerability and social exclusion examine how factors such as exploitation, victimisation, and inequality affect individuals and communities, preparing students to support vulnerable people effectively. The course also addresses the growing importance of digital policing, including cybercrime, digital evidence, online safety, and the use of technology in criminal investigations. Research methods and evidence-based policing modules enable students to investigate real policing issues and develop practical solutions through independent research projects. In addition, students study incident response and counter-terrorism, gaining insight into the challenges of protecting communities from major threats. Throughout the degree, students develop essential transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience, critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making. By graduation, students are well prepared to apply for police constable positions and pursue careers in law enforcement, criminal justice agencies, community safety, probation services, youth justice, and other public sector roles.
