COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science programme provides a comprehensive education in the scientific principles behind the discovery, development, manufacture, and regulation of medicines. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in pharmaceutical regulations, molecular and cellular biology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, and chemistry. They learn about Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and the safety regulations that govern pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, while also developing essential laboratory and professional skills. In the second year, the course becomes more specialised, covering advanced organic chemistry, pharmaceutical formulation, pharmacology, quality assurance, active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) development, and molecular biology. Students gain practical experience in designing medicines, understanding drug delivery systems, and ensuring the safety and quality of pharmaceutical products. An optional industrial placement year provides valuable work experience and industry exposure. In the final year, students explore contemporary drug design using computational methods and bioinformatics, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes, and advanced therapeutics and drug delivery systems. They also complete an independent research project under academic supervision, allowing them to apply their scientific knowledge to a real-world research problem and develop skills in experimentation, data analysis, and professional scientific communication. Throughout the degree, laboratory work and practical applications are integrated into almost every module, ensuring graduates develop strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving abilities. By the end of the programme, students are well prepared for careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug formulation, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, research and development, biopharmaceutical production, and other roles across the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors, making this degree an excellent choice for students interested in science and improving human health through medicines and therapeutic innovations.
