COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing Practice degree provides a comprehensive education that combines scientific knowledge, evidence-based practice, and extensive clinical experience to prepare students for a professional career in mental health nursing. The programme begins by exploring the bio-psychosocial principles of health and wellbeing, where students develop an understanding of anatomy, physiology, psychology, microbiology, pathophysiology, and neurology through patient-centred learning. They learn how physical, psychological, and social factors influence health and gain the ability to communicate complex medical information effectively. The course also develops academic and research skills through enquiry and evidence-based practice modules, enabling students to critically evaluate research, use professional literature, and apply scientific evidence to improve patient care. Foundations of Nursing Practice introduces essential mental health nursing skills, focusing on health promotion, holistic assessment, therapeutic relationships, professionalism, and reflective practice. Students gain practical experience through simulated clinical environments and interactive sessions with patients and carers. As the programme progresses, modules on altered physiology and wellbeing deepen students' understanding of disease processes, co-morbidities, pharmacological treatments, and interventions that support recovery and wellbeing. Three extensive practice placements allow students to apply their knowledge in a variety of clinical settings, gradually increasing their responsibility and confidence in assessing, planning, and delivering safe, compassionate, and person-centred care. The programme also emphasises leadership, teamwork, and interprofessional learning, helping students understand healthcare improvement, ethical practice, cultural diversity, and the importance of collaboration across healthcare professions. A final-year dissertation enables students to undertake independent research and develop advanced analytical and critical thinking skills. Throughout the course, students gain the knowledge, clinical competence, communication abilities, and professional values needed to support individuals experiencing mental health difficulties across the lifespan. Upon graduation, they are fully prepared to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and pursue rewarding careers in the National Health Service, private healthcare, community services, charities, prisons, schools, and other mental health settings both nationally and internationally.
