COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care degree is a multidisciplinary programme designed to give students a deep understanding of health, wellbeing, and social care systems while preparing them for professional roles in the sector. The course explores how health inequalities, social policies, and welfare systems affect individuals and communities, helping students understand the challenges faced by different service users across society. You’ll study topics such as safeguarding vulnerable adults and children, ethics and professional practice, health promotion, community engagement, counselling and communication skills, and contemporary issues including mental health, obesity, poverty, ageing populations, and dementia. A strong focus is placed on the biopsychosocial approach, which examines how biological, psychological, and social factors influence health and wellbeing. The programme also develops valuable research skills, enabling students to design and conduct independent research projects and critically evaluate evidence to improve practice and policy. Through community-based projects, group work, and practical placements in settings such as schools, hospices, care homes, and mental health services, students gain hands-on experience and build professional networks. The course encourages engagement with volunteering opportunities and guest lectures from industry professionals, helping students develop transferable skills including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. Graduates are well prepared for careers across a wide range of sectors, including the National Health Service, local authorities, charities such as Mind and Age UK, educational institutions, and private care organisations. The degree also provides an excellent foundation for further professional training and postgraduate study in areas such as nursing, social work, counselling, physiotherapy, teaching, and other health and social care professions.
