COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Game Development degree is a practical and industry-focused programme designed to prepare students for careers in the rapidly growing games and interactive media industries. The course combines programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and immersive technologies with creative game design principles. Students begin by developing a strong foundation in programming using languages such as Python and C#, alongside software engineering concepts including object-oriented programming, algorithms, testing, and project management. They also learn full-stack web development skills using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, React, and databases. As the course progresses, students explore game design and development through professional game engines, learning how to create engaging gameplay experiences, develop visual assets, and implement scripting and programming techniques. Specialist modules cover immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), allowing students to design interactive applications and understand emerging technologies shaping the future of gaming. Artificial Intelligence and Game Programming introduces concepts such as non-player character behaviour, finite state machines, behaviour trees, and intelligent search algorithms. Advanced modules focus on multiplayer game programming, networked systems, game security, and procedural content generation, where algorithms automatically create levels, environments, and dynamic game content. Throughout the programme, students work in a studio-like environment and gain practical experience through team-based industrial projects with external clients, developing valuable communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. The final-year Computing Project and Game Showpiece allow students to showcase their technical and creative abilities by developing a substantial independent project under academic supervision. The degree places a strong emphasis on real-world learning and employability, equipping graduates with both specialist game development expertise and transferable software engineering skills.
