COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course combines scientific theory with practical laboratory experience to provide a comprehensive understanding of human health and disease. In the early stages of the degree, you’ll study how cells develop into tissues, organs, and body systems, while exploring the molecular processes that keep living organisms functioning. Modules such as Cell to System Physiology and Molecular Basis of Life introduce topics including genetics, biochemistry, cell signalling, metabolism, and laboratory techniques such as chromatography, spectrophotometry, and flow cytometry. You’ll also develop professional and academic skills relevant to healthcare and laboratory environments, including scientific writing, patient care, and understanding regulatory and safety requirements. As you progress, you’ll explore infection, immunity, molecular medicine, and contemporary clinical research, learning how modern technologies and research methods are used to diagnose and treat disease. Advanced modules examine the pathogenesis and diagnosis of disease, blood science, and independent research investigation, allowing you to apply your knowledge to real-world scientific problems. In the final stage of the programme, you can specialise through optional modules in areas such as Human Genetics and Genomics, Clinical Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Haematology and Transfusion Science, Cellular Pathology, and Clinical Biochemistry. These subjects provide in-depth knowledge of genetic disorders, infectious diseases, immune system dysfunction, blood disorders, and diagnostic laboratory techniques. The course also places strong emphasis on employability, helping you identify your strengths, build professional skills, and prepare for careers in healthcare science and biomedical research. Graduates are equipped for roles in NHS and private laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, research organisations, and public health services, while also being well prepared for postgraduate study and professional development in the rapidly evolving field of biomedical science.
