The BSc (Hons) Biochemistry curriculum provides a strong foundation in biological and chemical sciences while developing practical laboratory, research, and professional skills relevant to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The programme begins with Introduction to Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic Regulations and Professional Skills, where students learn about important industry regulations, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and cosmetic safety requirements, while also developing professional and employability skills. Introductory Molecular and Cellular Biology explores the structure and function of cells, microorganisms, and viruses, introducing key laboratory techniques and safe scientific practice. Introductory Pharmacology, Physiology and Anatomy provides an understanding of how the human body functions and how drugs influence different organ systems, while Introductory Chemistry for Pharmaceutical and Biological Science develops core chemical knowledge essential for understanding biological processes. In the second year, Infection and Immunity examines infectious diseases, the immune system, and microbiological techniques used to identify microorganisms and study antibiotic resistance. Further Chemistry for Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences builds advanced knowledge of organic chemistry and its applications in pharmaceutical development through practical laboratory work. Cell Signaling and Metabolic Regulation investigates how cells communicate and regulate energy processes, while Further Molecular and Cellular Biology focuses on homeostasis, molecular biology techniques, and the development of research tools and medicines. Students may also undertake an optional Industrial Placement year to gain valuable professional experience. In the final year, Contemporary Drug Design introduces modern computational approaches to drug discovery, including molecular modelling, bioinformatics, and drug-target interactions. Biochemical Aspects of Disease explores the molecular mechanisms behind genetic and acquired diseases and how this knowledge contributes to new therapeutic developments. Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing examines the production, processing, purification, and large-scale manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals. The programme concludes with an independent Research Project, allowing students to investigate a specialised topic and develop advanced research and analytical skills.
