COURSE CURRICULUM

The first-year curriculum of the BEng (Hons) Engineering programme provides a strong foundation in the fundamental principles and practical skills required for a successful engineering career. Digital Technologies for Engineering introduces essential academic and professional skills, including research methods, report writing, referencing, data analysis, modelling techniques, and basic programming. Students also gain experience in designing, building, and testing simple engineering systems while developing problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. Engineering Design Fundamentals focuses on the core principles of engineering design, materials science, sustainability, and computer programming. Through lectures, workshops, and practical projects, students learn how to approach real-world engineering challenges systematically, select appropriate materials, and understand the environmental impact of engineering decisions. Mechanical Principles develops the mathematical and mechanical knowledge that underpins all engineering disciplines. Students study algebra, trigonometry, vectors, equations, and introductory calculus while exploring engineering concepts such as forces, stress, motion, bending, and torsion. This module strengthens analytical and numerical skills and demonstrates how mathematical principles are applied to the design and operation of machines and structures. Electronic and Electrical Principles introduces the fundamental concepts of electrical and electronic engineering, including electrical circuits, current, voltage, resistance, and the principles that govern electronic systems and devices. Together, these modules provide students with a broad understanding of engineering theory and practical application while developing essential skills in design, programming, communication, teamwork, and technical problem-solving. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and sustainability, encouraging students to think creatively and apply their knowledge to real engineering situations. By the end of the first year, students have developed the technical competence and confidence needed to progress into more advanced areas of engineering study, while establishing a solid foundation for careers in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and multidisciplinary engineering industries.
