COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering curriculum provides students with a strong foundation in engineering principles while developing advanced technical, analytical, and professional skills. The programme begins with Digital Technologies for Engineering and Engineering Design Fundamentals, where students learn essential engineering tools, technical communication, modelling techniques, programming, design processes, and sustainable engineering practices. Mechanical Principles introduces the mathematical and mechanical concepts required to understand forces, motion, stress, and material behaviour, while Electronic and Electrical Principles develops knowledge of electrical circuits and fundamental electronic systems. The Interdisciplinary Group Project gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively on research-based engineering challenges, strengthening their teamwork, project management, and problem-solving abilities. Automation and Control focuses on control systems and intelligent technologies, enabling students to understand and design automated engineering solutions. Electrical Machines and Transmission Systems explores how electrical energy is generated, transmitted, and utilised through practical laboratory work and simulation software. Analogue and Digital Systems introduces microprocessors, programming, electronic circuits, amplifiers, and circuit design using industry-standard tools. An optional Placement Year allows students to gain valuable industrial experience and apply their knowledge in professional engineering environments. In the final stages of the programme, Advanced Digital Systems examines digital processes, memory systems, programmable devices, and hardware design using specialised programming languages. Advanced Power Systems develops expertise in electrical power management, protection systems, power flow analysis, and the economic and political factors influencing energy distribution. Applied Engineering and Manufacturing Techniques combines engineering with business and leadership skills, covering project management, risk assessment, maintenance strategies, artificial intelligence applications, thermal imaging, vibration analysis, and manufacturing approaches such as Lean Manufacturing and Just-In-Time systems. The programme culminates in a major Project, where students independently investigate and solve an engineering problem, demonstrating their technical knowledge and research capabilities. Overall, the curriculum equips graduates with comprehensive knowledge in electronic and electrical engineering, practical laboratory experience, programming and design skills, and professional competencies required for careers in power systems, automation, manufacturing, electronics, and other advanced engineering sectors.
