COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sports Journalism curriculum combines practical journalism training with digital media, broadcasting, and professional communication skills to prepare students for careers in the sports media industry. The programme begins with Introduction to Journalism, where students develop essential skills in researching stories, interviewing sources, writing news articles, producing podcasts, and using social media and analytics to promote content. Club Journalism and Communications focuses on creating multimedia content for professional sports organisations, teaching students how to engage supporters, manage public relations challenges, and build relationships with athletes, coaches, and the media. Media Law and Ethics provides a strong understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities of journalists, covering issues such as libel, privacy, copyright, anonymity, contempt of court, and professional regulations governed by the Independent Press Standards Organisation and the Ofcom. Digital Publishing develops skills in creating content for online platforms, while Social, Digital, Video teaches students how to film, edit, script, and distribute engaging video content across social media and digital channels. Covering Live Sport gives students hands-on experience in producing live blogs and professional outside broadcasts in real-time sporting environments. Live Reporting introduces students to the fast-paced world of newsrooms, where they write, edit, and publish stories while using multimedia and analytics to engage audiences. Features: Pitching and Writing develops long-form storytelling and feature writing abilities. Sports News and Broadcasting focuses on television and digital sports production, enabling students to film, present, and produce sports programmes and create professional football-based television content. Employability and Entrepreneurship helps students build professional portfolios, gain industry experience through work placements, and understand how journalism businesses operate. Finally, the Major Journalism Project allows students to produce a substantial piece of independent journalism that showcases their skills and interests. Overall, the curriculum equips graduates with practical reporting, broadcasting, digital production, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in sports journalism, broadcasting, media relations, and digital content creation.
