COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) Social Work curriculum provides students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional values required to become effective and compassionate social workers. The programme begins with modules such as The Context for Social Work and Introduction to Social Work, where students explore how social policies, political ideologies, and community approaches influence social work practice and the wellbeing of individuals and communities. Psychosocial Theories for Social Work introduces key sociological and psychological perspectives that help explain human behaviour and social issues across the life course. Preparing for Social Work Practice develops essential academic, communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills while preparing students for professional placements. Legal Frameworks for Social Work provides a strong understanding of legislation, policy, and ethical decision-making in relation to children, families, adults, and carers. Theory and Practice for Social Work combines theoretical learning with supervised placements that meet the requirements of Social Work England, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real practice settings. Supporting Individuals, Families and Groups focuses on assessment, intervention, professional relationships, and issues such as power, autonomy, discrimination, and safeguarding. Research Informed Social Work and Social Work Literature Review develop students’ research and analytical skills through the critical examination of current evidence and independent study projects. Organisational Contexts and Professional Identity explores how workplace culture, management structures, and political influences shape social work practice and professional development. Complex Decision Making in Social Work equips students with advanced skills in risk assessment, safeguarding, critical analysis, and decision-making when working with vulnerable adults and children. Finally, the Final Social Work Placement provides extensive practical experience in professional settings, enabling students to undertake high-risk decision-making and legal interventions under the guidance of experienced practice educators. Overall, the curriculum combines academic study, professional practice, and research skills to prepare graduates for registration as qualified social workers and for careers supporting individuals, families, and communities across a wide range of social care settings.
