COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Music Industries curriculum provides students with a comprehensive understanding of both the creative and commercial aspects of the contemporary music industry. The programme begins with modules such as Music Production and Origins of Modern Music, where students learn recording techniques, music history, and the cultural influences that have shaped modern genres. Event Planning and Promotion and Touring in the Modern Music Industry develop practical business skills by teaching students how to organise live events, manage budgets, market performances, and coordinate tours across multiple venues. Through Individual and Continuing Progression Pathway modules, students receive personalised guidance from industry professionals, helping them refine their chosen specialism and track their professional development. Advanced Music Production enhances technical abilities in recording and digital audio production, while Analysis of Modern Music encourages critical examination of popular music genres, their historical contexts, and commercial success. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies according to their interests, including composition, recorded music revenue, keyboard skills, and the study of Afro-Diasporic musical traditions and their influence on modern music. Teaching Practice prepares students for careers in music education and online instruction by developing teaching methodologies and course design skills. Festival Curation provides experience in designing and managing large-scale music events, while Investigation of Practice encourages research into professional approaches within a chosen specialism. The Vocational Portfolio module enables students to create a professional portfolio and marketing materials that showcase their technical and creative abilities to potential employers and industry clients. Additional opportunities such as Collaborative Song Writing with Dave Stewart further enhance industry engagement and creative development.
