COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree provides a comprehensive and industry-focused education that develops students into creative, confident, and professional designers. The course combines traditional graphic design principles with modern digital technologies, allowing students to explore areas such as branding, typography, motion graphics, illustration, web and interface design, experience design, and emerging technologies including augmented and virtual reality. In the first year, modules such as Core Design Method and Practice and Visual Communication – Exploration and Practice introduce students to visual communication theories, graphic research, image creation, and typography, helping them understand how design communicates messages and influences audiences. Students also develop digital skills through Digital Motion Design, learning to create and edit moving graphics using professional software and hardware. As the course progresses, modules such as Experimental Motion Design and Experience Design and the Cultural Creative(s) encourage innovation, storytelling, and experimentation with new forms of communication and design practices. Employability is a key focus throughout the programme, with opportunities to undertake placements, live projects, competitions, and collaborations through Exploring the Creative Industries and the optional Design Applied Professional Practice year. Students build professional portfolios, receive feedback from industry experts, and develop self-branding, networking, and career management skills. In the final year, modules such as Making Your Mark, Professional Design, and the Design – Major Final Portfolio allow students to create an extensive body of professional work that reflects their individual interests, creative identity, and career ambitions. Graduates leave with strong skills in visual communication, problem-solving, digital design, project management, and professional presentation, making them highly employable across the creative sector. Career opportunities include graphic designer, brand designer, UX/UI designer, motion graphics designer, digital content creator, creative director, illustrator, exhibition designer, packaging designer, and freelance creative practitioner, with the course providing the knowledge, experience, and portfolio needed to succeed in the dynamic and constantly evolving design industry.
