COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) Fine Art degree combines Sunderland’s rich artistic heritage with contemporary creative practice, helping students develop as independent and professional artists. The course encourages experimentation across a wide range of disciplines, including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, digital art, installation, film, and performance. In the first year, students build essential practical skills through modules such as Contemporary Fine Art Making Skills, Contemporary Approaches to Drawing, and Theories and Ideas, exploring both traditional and modern artistic methods while developing research and critical thinking abilities. As the course progresses, students engage with the social and cultural role of art, undertake independent studio projects, and participate in collaborative live exhibitions and real-world creative commissions. Modules such as Contemporary Art in Society and Collaborative Creativity help students understand how art connects with communities, sustainability, and professional practice. The final year focuses on developing an individual artistic identity through advanced studio practice, independent research, and the production of a major body of work for a public exhibition and degree showcase. Throughout the programme, students gain valuable transferable skills including communication, problem-solving, adaptability, project management, and creative thinking. The course also prepares students for the realities of working in the creative industries through sessions on self-employment, professional development, and the ‘Creative Lives’ lecture programme featuring practising artists and industry experts. Graduates are equipped for a wide variety of careers, including professional fine artist, curator, arts administrator, gallery manager, community arts practitioner, teacher, creative consultant, public arts coordinator, and artist-in-residence. The programme also supports flexible portfolio careers and freelance opportunities, giving students the confidence, practical experience, and professional knowledge needed to succeed in the contemporary art world and wider creative industries.
