COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film and Media programme offers an engaging combination of film studies, media theory, and practical media production, providing students with both critical and creative skills for careers in the media and creative industries. The course begins by examining how media shapes society through modules such as Media Texts and Contexts, where students explore media history, cultural practices, and the role of power in contemporary media. Practical modules such as Making Media Content develop technical skills in photography, video production, and visual storytelling through hands-on workshops and collaborative projects. Students also study Film History and Criticism, learning how politics, culture, technology, and historical events influence cinema and how films can be critically analysed through written and verbal communication. Further modules focus on factual media production and real-world media research, enabling students to investigate the impact of news and media on society while developing valuable research and problem-solving skills. The programme examines cinema as both an art form and a cultural product through modules such as Cinema and Society and Cinema and the Senses, encouraging students to analyse how films influence audiences and reflect social and cultural issues. Optional modules, including Hidden Histories, Popular Culture, Script to Screen, Media Research Project, and Major Practical Project: Scriptwriting, allow students to specialise according to their interests and career goals. Students also explore global media industries, advertising, branding, and the commercial aspects of storytelling through Global Media Societies and gain practical experience by organising events such as a film festival project. Throughout the programme, students develop transferable skills in communication, critical thinking, research, presentation, teamwork, and project management. By combining academic research with practical application and industry engagement, the course prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in television and film production, journalism, digital media, marketing, public relations, teaching, consultancy, advertising, and creative communications, while also providing an excellent foundation for postgraduate study and further professional development.
